He is the New York Times Bestselling author of six books and counting, including The Impact Equation, with Julien Smith.
In Barry Feldman’s recent ‘who cares what Chris Brogan is drinking‘ the whole article is someone else describing you as a REAL person (or a ‘highly in demand resource’ as Barry so succinctly puts). Is the most important aspect of business recognition to humanise what we stand for as opposed to the products we represent?
My point, I suppose, is that we do business with people. The moment we feel ANY kind of connection to others, we have the great opportunity to feel any kind of affinity with someone whatsoever. That’s the biggest goal. We buy from people we like. It’s important that people know who they’re buying from in LOTS of circumstances (not all).
What are the key human traits businesses need to grasp to build credibility within their marketplace?
To build credibility, keep your commitments, make it easy to do business with you, and help me feel like I belong. I just bought a product that stopped working a week later. I went to the website to get this problem resolved and it took me almost 30 minutes to fix. That’s not especially helpful. But if they keep their commitments, life will be even more magical. : )
In ‘The Impact Equation’ you mention that the majority ‘passively consume content rather than creating it’. Is it more important than ever to become confident writers to stand out from the competition and find our own voice in the marketplace?
Yes, but you don’t even have to WRITE. You have to create. Maybe you’re a wonderful talker. Then talk. Do it into a podcast or a video show. Make interesting content that gathers people to what you do. That’s the goal.
In ‘The Impact Equation’ you highlight businesses as fledgling TV stations. How exciting is the opportunity to create emotional content and own our platforms to become media companies?
I feel that it’s not even that emotional content be created, but simply that HELPFUL content be created. It’s astounding how, when given the opportunity to entertain and educate me, most companies would rather bore me.
Is the art of generosity, serving others and altruism (and not driven by ego) as a blueprint to embrace a new way of communication? Based on your ‘be helpful + meet helpful people + connect really helpful people = future for amazingness’ formula.
I feel that our biggest opportunity is to stop acting like a bunch of robots. We could deliver so much more value, have so many more referrals, get so much more done, if we’d treat people like we’d want them to treat our most beloved relatives.
Your new book ‘The Freaks Shall Inherit The Earth’ is on the horizon. Can you give us a sneak preview to the message that the book will be sharing?
The simplest way to describe the book is “entrepreneurship for weirdos.” If you don’t naturally “fit in,” this book says that there’s business you can achieve, even if you’re not the cookie cutter. I’m very passionate about helping people realize that they belong, especially when they’re the odd person out. : )
